Our team has submitted an integrated urban intervention proposal for Plaza de España to the Cartagena City Council. Our objective is clear: to transform an underused space into a pedestrian-friendly, accessible environment designed for urban life, public gatherings, and tourism development.
Currently, the square faces several limitations, as shown in the analysis below: an impractical perimeter, narrow pedestrian areas, disused fountains, worn pavements, and outdated urban furniture. Additionally, there are no designated areas for events or adequate playgrounds.
Our proposal, aligned with sustainability and urban regeneration principles, includes the following key actions:
Expanding pedestrian areas to ensure smoother connections between the historic center and the Alameda.
Installing new mobile urban furniture, offering flexible and modern public seating and equipment.
Improving pavement, lighting, and accessibility, enhancing safety and user comfort.
Creating zones with fountains and water play features, encouraging people to linger and enjoy the space.
Upgrading and enlarging the children’s play area, making it more visible, safe, and attractive.
Introducing mobile food and beverage kiosks, to activate the space without compromising flexibility.
This project not only addresses current spatial needs, but also projects the plaza toward the future, in line with sustainable mobility and heritage revitalization principles.
